Sauna Fest

May 16-18

Blue Lake, Rotorua

Sauna Fest is an attempt to grow sauna culture in New Zealand. We aim to create a space where we can collectively explore the health-giving benefits of sauna. One way that we do this is by incorporating ancient traditions into our sauna routines, using steam and oils to create a magical experience and enhance well-being. Over the weekend, we will have 15 saunas with lots other activities for you to enjoy.

What we do.

OUR STORY

There are three of us behind The Sauna Project; David Seidel, Keelan Kanji and Luke Mexted. It all started in the driveway of our flat, off the beach in Mt Maunganui in the summer of 2022.

We took matters into our own hands and built the sauna we envisioned. As we began sharing our labour of love with friends and family it became apparent just how much peace, connection and joy the sauna was bringing everyone who experienced it.

WHY SAUNA?

Saunas offer us a chance to complete the stress cycle that begins when we experience stress, be that physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. Stressors wind up our brain and body, storing energy and influencing our state of mind and being.

Word on the street…

  • “The Sauna Project has become a weekly ritual. We are so lucky to park up at the beach, watch the waves while cooking inside then cool off with an ocean swim. Thanks for bringing this to the Mount!”

    Matthew B.

  • “The Sauna Project fully captures what Scandinavian sauna culture means to me; from the smell of burning wood to the reverence for an ancient ritual that not only heals but brings people together. I feel truly grateful to have this accessible to me on a weekly basis in my local community, for my mental and physical health.”

    Cecilie C.

  • "The sauna is incredible, so beautifully built. You’re in this amazing space with beautiful windows, great smelling wood, the natural heat and stoking of the fire. All you have to do is sit, relax, get into the body and let the sauna do the work. I’m desperate for The Sauna Project to bring one down south!”
